Scorpio New Moon

20 degrees Scorpio
The New Moon aligns at 20 degrees in the clandestine sign of Scorpio, arguably one of the most transformative of the zodiac signs. Scorpio is the realm of the depths - deep desires, obsessions, the occult, taboos, secrets and buried resentments are kept here. It's where we meet with our mortality and face the limits of what we can and cannot control. That this New Moon is aligned with the Mars-Uranus opposition suggests the potential for chaotic energy, turmoil and breakthroughs leading to fresh openings forward.
Mars, the ancient ruler of Scorpio, is in its home sign and its influence is prominent now. Mars in Scorpio does not tend to 'shoot from the hip' without foresight, as the fixed sign of Scorpio resists reactivity. Mars is more akin to a sniper in Scorpio, when and if it does finally strike it wants to annihilate it's target, minimizing collateral damage. However, the opposition with chaotic Uranus suggests turbulence or surprising effects reverberating from the instinctive Mars trigger.
The Sabian Symbol for 20 Scorpio is "Obeying His Conscience, A Soldier Resists Orders." I can't help thinking of the new Netflix film I watched recently starring Michael Fassbender entitled The Killer, where a disciplined, professional sniper misfires, throwing his entire life into chaos. His life was built on meticulous planning and lack of empathy, but finds himself having to instinctively respond to the unexpected and at last listen to his intuition, which diverts from the rehearsed script he's had drilled into him.
While Scorpio knows the value of keeping emotions close to the chest, with Mars opposite Uranus, building frustrations and seething resentment could erupt in dramatic ways, or serve as a catalyst for the surgical removal of the festering toxicity in the environment.
Asteroid goddesses Ceres and Lilith also feature at this New Moon. Ceres, the doting mother who was plunged into grief when her beloved daughter Persephone was kidnapped by Pluto, is in Scorpio joining Mars and trining Neptune, suggesting sacrifice or loss of a deeply-held desire.
Lilith, who represents the reclaiming of one's own autonomy through rejection, is in Leo is squaring the New Moon. Dramatic displays empowering one's self through bold rejection of oppression are likely scenarios as this lunar cycle progresses.
The Sun will oppose Uranus the following day, shining a light on the unexpected and offering opportunities for liberation. Frustrations that have been building are reaching a breaking point, and what has been operating in the shadows may be revealed.
The burning ambition of Mars is alchemized as it joins the Sun in the coming days, and we may find an inner determination that deepens our resolve. From November 16 to 23, the Mars-Sun conjunction will trine escapist Neptune and then sextile powerful Pluto. While the trine to Neptune may offer an invitation to surrender that which is beyond our control - and experience a measure of transcendence in the process - the sextile to Pluto suggests a relentless determination to arise to the challenges that are within our control.
One of the greatest lessons for Scorpio is to recognize what is in our control and surrender what is not. When we can intensely focus energy into that which can truly effect change, we are empowered. As the great Marcus Aurelius said, "You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."
